A 1930 Duesenberg J convertible coupe by Hibbard & Darrin owned by the “OFF Brothers” –Ron Elenbaas and Bill Johnson of Richland, Michigan—received top honors at the 15th annual Glenmoor Gathering Of Significant Automobiles. The invitation-only concours was held September 18-20 at historic Glenmoor Country Club near Canton, Ohio.
The Duesenberg, which was originally built for Honore Palmer of Chicago and Paris, was one of 200 cars on display at this year’s event. The 2009 highlights were “The Automobiles of Edsel Ford” featuring cars owned by Mr. Ford as well as those designed during his presidency of the Ford and Lincoln Motor Companies.
A special display of 10 vintage 1934 Ford hot rods curated by hot rod and custom car authority Ken Gross included the Pierson Brothers coupe and the So-Cal Speed Shop coupe.
Grand Marshall was Moray Callum, executive director Ford North Americas Design. A true “car guy,” Callum enjoyed visiting with car exhibitors and attendees throughout the weekend.
The show has grown into a weekend event, capped off by the concours on Sunday. But, as the event’s executive director, David Schultz pointed out, there’s more to enjoy on the day of the concours— cooking demonstrations, junior judging, unique automotive displays and, his favorite, “a genuine automotive forensics expert” who’s stationed in the “Glenmoor Garage.”
“Attendance was the largest ever and the show field was simply outstanding,” said Schultz.“We know car exhibitors have many shows from which to choose. We work hard at making this a ‘car owner-friendly’ event.”
The 2009 Glenmoor Gathering poster artwork was produced by former Ford designer Camilo Pardo, who was joined in the Glenmoor Gathering automotive art tent by 10 fellow artists in displaying their works for sale during the weekend.
The 2010 Glenmoor Gathering will be held September 17-19.It will feature “The Automobiles of Cleveland”— a look at the automobiles designed and built from the early 1900’s through the 1930’s in Cleveland, when that city rivaled Detroit as a major automobile manufacturing center. Also featured in 2010 will be the Italian-built Bizzarini—plus, as usual, a few surprises.
