The Best of Show winning Horch 853 Erdmann & Rossi in front of the Pebble Beach Lodge.
This is where the world comes to see classic cars, to add a classic car to a collection, or to sell an entire collection; this is Pebble Beach.
For just shy of 60 years the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been the most influential car event in America and for the last 30 years, without question, it has been one of the world’s foremost shows for collectors and spectators alike. For the past three decades Car Collector has taken readers to this prestigious event, to the Monterey Historic Races, the auctions, and the big Sunday show at the Lodge at Pebble Beach. Over the years the complexion of the Pebble Beach Weekend has changed, from one major event and a vintage motorcar race at Laguna Seca, to a weeklong gala of motorsports celebrations, collector car auctions, chic private parties, and a one day road rally that has shifted the focus from legendary trailer queens to roadworthy collector cars that can make the grade literally on the open highway and on the Concours show field.
With all of the events that have become Pebble Beach traditions in the past decade the Concours d’Elegance on Sunday has become the icing on a multi-layered cake that now demands the better part of a week and almost every hour of every day to consume.
This year to cover Pebble Beach from two very different perspectives, our Auction Editor Rick Carey, and European Editor Wouter Melissen (who has first hand experience covering the biggest events in the world from Goodwood to Villa D’Este), take us on a whirlwind tour of Pebble Beach from both the collector’s and investor’s point’s of view. As Wouter slips us behind the wheel of worldly classics and postwar cars at the premier shows and motorsports competitions at Laguna Seca, Rick gets us ringside seats at this year’s major collector car auctions for an in depth look at the bidding and decision making at 2009’s pivotal Pebble Beach auctions in Monterey, Carmel, and at The Lodge.
This is as close as you can get without making the pilgrimage to the Monterey Peninsula, so step into the shoes of our editorial team for a whirlwind tour of the world’s greatest week of emotional and financial emersion into antique, classic, postwar, sports and racing cars. This is all a part of the Pebble Beach Extravaganza.
